Pynchon is better in small doses. I may not be getting the volume of reading done I wanted this summer, but, if I can get Rainbow read (and read well), that’s an accomplishment. One more merit badge. What’s more: reading Pynchon in slow motion makes it possible for me to enjoy him.  There are still plenty of moments where it feels like a slog, and times where I’ll reach the bottom of a page to find my thoughts have fled to considerations of what other planet I’d like to live on [Jupiter]. But, really, I think I’ll make it through this time.

  1. Hey–I hear ya. Pynchon is real tough. I finished Lot 49, no problem and thought it was great. Then moved onto Vineland, which was a lot of fun and interesting. Moved onto Rainbow but had to put it down. To try and motivate myself to get through it, I decided to buy another copy. Both of them still sit on my shelf. Then, in a total act of idiocy, I bought “Against the Day,” got a third of the way through and put it down. We’ll see how it goes.

    Good luck. He’s tough.
